Experiment with a tripod and different exposures for more creative lighting.
This is the third tip for telling the wedding story. For the first tip, we talked about capturing the little details. But to tell the entire story, you need more than the little details. Beyond the classic poses and candid pictures, we need to capture the scene-setting shots.

Capture the scene and decorations before guests arrive.
While your busy photographing, take a minute to step back and capture the whole scene. I usually do this several times during the wedding. Its nice to show what the reception hall or church looks like decorated before guests arrive, and then again filled with friends and family.

Place the couple in the middle of the composition, to symbolize their day.
Don’t think you can’t have fun with these photos, either. Here are a few ideas besides just pointing and shooting.
- Get down close to an object. Place it in the corner of your foreground and show the rest of the scene behind it.
- Experiment with a tripod and different camera exposures (check out the church with the glowing stain glass for an example.)
- Shoot from several different angles. Try making the bride and groom the center of the photo, to symbolize the day revolving around them.
